Socialists retain Santa Fe province

Published

The Socialist Party (PS) has retained the governorship of the Santa Fe province in central eastern Argentina following a Sunday poll.

The PS candidate Antonio Bonfatti took 38.4% of the vote, although a surprisingly close second was Miguel del Sel of Republican Proposal (PRO) a centre right party who took 35.4% of the vote.

President Cristina Fernández Kirchner’s candidate, Agustin Rossi of the Front for Victory (FPV) came a poor third with 22.3% of the vote.

The result is unlikely to affect the outcome of the presidential election later this year which, on current trends, Kirchner should win comfortably. However, the rules do require a candidate to obtain at least 45% of the vote to win in the first round and analysts are watching to see if opinion poll ratings for Kirchner start to slide.
