Southern Sudan independence vote looms

Published

The referendum to decide if Southern Sudan should become independent from the North will be held on Sunday 9th January 2011.

Voters have two options open to them, either to remain as part of Sudan or to vote for secession and declare South Sudan a independent and sovereign state.

The referendum came about as part of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005 but a number of controversies and problems have delayed the referendum until now.
