Stalemate loosens in Ivory Coast

Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo has agreed to remove the blockade around the headquarters of his rival and internationally recognised winner of the November 2010 Presidential Elections Alassane Ouattara.

Although a minor move, it does suggest that Mr Gbagbo is softening his stance in the face of international and ECOWAS pressure.

During this period of stalemate there are reports that the country has defaulted on its debt payment and that public servants haven’t been paid.
