UDP win unprecedented third term

Prime Minister Dean Barrow has led his centre-right United Democratic Party (UDP) to an unprecedented third term in office following the general election on Wednesday.

The UDP took 19 of the 31 seats in the House of Representatives, up two seats on the 2012 general election result. Their main rivals, the centre-left People’s United Party (PUP) took 12 seats down from 14 seats.

The UDP took 50.01% of the vote to PUP’s 47.29% with a new third party, the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) taking just 1.63% of the vote.
