Published

The ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) led by Prime Minister Dean Barrow has won the general election which took place on Wednesday.

The UDP took a much reduced majority, going down from 25 of the 31 seats in the House of Representatives to just 17 seats after yesterday’s election. The People’s United Party, who ruled for ten years prior to 2008 went up from eight seats to 14 seats.

The two parties remain the dominant parties in Belize with none of the smaller parties making a breakthrough.

The Prime Minister has said that a priority of his new government will be to renegotiate their $550 million overseas debt burden.
