Uzbekistan elects a successor to Islam Karimov

Following the death of Islam Karimov on 2nd September Uzbekistan is going to the polls today to elect a new president. There are four candidates in the running but realistically the only candidate with any chance of winning in this autocratic state is Karimov’s successor Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The four candidates standing are:

Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan
Sarvar Otamuradov, Uzbekistan National Revival Democratic Party
Narimon Urmanov, Justice Social Democratic Party (Adolat)
Khatamjan Ketmanov, People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan

Early voting started ten days before the election for those who could not attend their home polling station on the day. There are 20,428,891 eligible voters who will vote at 9,383 voting stations from 6 a.m. local time.
