Votes for a new president

Published

The mid pacific chain of island atolls formerly known as the Gilbert islands will today vote for a new president.

The 40,000 voters, spread across 33 atolls, will be voting for one of three candidates nominated by the 42 member parliament. The incumbent president Anote Tong will be seeking his third term in office. His two opponents are Dr Tetua Taitai and former opposition leader Rimeta Beniamina.

The economy of Kiribati is based largely on the fisheries industry and remittances from diaspora living abroad.
