Winners and losers in the presidential race

Published

There have been some surprising results in the Ipsos MRBI opinion poll published in today’s Irish Times.

Fine Gael, which had such an outstanding result in the elections earlier this year, has seen the popularity of its candidate, Gay Mitchell, plummet to 9% (down 11% since July’s poll). The controversy surrounding David Norris has also led to a drop for him and he is now third from the bottom, just ahead of Mitchell and Dana Rosemary Scallon (on 6%). Independent, Mary Davis, remains on 12%, with Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness just ahead on 19%. The front runner is still Labour’s Michael D Higgins, now on 23%, but it is the independent, Seán Gallagher, who now seems to be a surprisingly strong contender, having gained seven points to take him up to 20%.
