Yuriko Koike elected Tokyo’s first female Governor

Yuriko Koike, a Liberal Democratic Party former Minister of Defence and Minister of Environment was elected Tokyo’s first female Governor yesterday. Koike (64) stood as an Independent against the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) preferred candidate Hiroya Masuda, beating him by 2,912,628 votes to 1,793,453 votes.

Shuntaro Torigoe, who was backed by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) took 1,346,103 votes.
