Zatlers fails in bid for second term

Published

President Valdis Zatlers has failed in his bid to win a second term. The vote was decided yesterday by the 100 lawmakers in the unicameral parliament or Saeima.

Although he secured the support of the ruling Unity bloc he still lost to Andris Berzins, a banker, and member of the Latvian Farmers’ Union (ZZS), the only other candidate. The votes were Zatlers 41 and Berzins 53.

Zatlers will remain in office until 7th July and this election does not alter the referendum which will take place on 23rd July to decide if a fresh general election should be held. If the Latvians vote for a fresh election , which they are expected to do, then it is most likely to be held in September.
