Anti government protests

About ten thousand opposition protesters gathered in the capital Tbilisi yesterday demanding the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili and democratic elections.

About four hundred demonstrators in the Black Sea port of Batumi and tried to attack the local TV station but were forced back by police.

Other anti government groups refused to join the protests.

President Saakashvili has been in office since 2004 and the next elections are due in 2013.
