Anti government riots turn to bloodshed

Published

Three people were killed and many more injured when an anti-government rally organised by the opposition Socialist Party (PS) turned violent.

Estimates suggest that around 20,000 people attended the rally calling for a general election following a bribery scandal involving the Deputy Prime Minister.

The Democratic Party (PD) won the 2009 general election narrowly (70 seats) with the support of the Socialist Movement for Integration (4 seats) in the 140 seat Parliament. The Socialist Party and its allies took 66 seats.

The next scheduled general election is not due until 2013.
