Argentina faces more strikes

Argentina’s General Labour Confederation called a one day strike yesterday, a continuation of the three day trucker’s strike last week which saw President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner returning back to the country from an overseas visit.

The strike, led by the powerful trade union leader Hugo Moyano, a former friend of President Kirchner but now someone in conflict with the presidency, involved truckers, health and textile workers, refuse collectors, general goods distributors and some rural workers.

There is every indication that the strikes will continue either as one day strikes or more protracted and targeted strikes as the unions demand better pay in an economy which is seeing rapidly rising inflation.
