Barak leaves Labor Party

Published

Ehud Barak, the Israeli Defence Minister announced today that he was leaving the Labor Party, along with four supporters, to form a new parliamentary faction within the coalition government called ‘Independence’.

This does not threaten the Likud led coalition government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which still has 66 of the 120 Knesset seats.  It does strengthen the hard-line elements in the government, making a settlement with the Palestinians much harder.
