Court rules NLD unlawful

Published

Late last week a court ruled that the party of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was unlawful because it did not register for the November 2010 elections.  The court upheld the ruling that the party should be dissolved.

Despite this setback, the party has launched a new website which can be found at www.nldburma.org

Myanmar’s new Parliament will convene for the first time this week.

Meanwhile a report published by the Burma Fund UN Office on Monday 31st January 2011 is highly critical of the election.  The report summarises that “The elections are a serious setback for the urgently needed national reconciliation.  Instead of moving towards an inclusive national dialogue, the elections have exacerbated ethnic tensions and instability, pushing Burma closer to the brink of civil war and the people of Burma further away from the realisation of their basic human rights.
