Crunch day for Katainen

Published

Leader of the National Coalition Party (NCP), Jyrki Katainen, has until today to indicate how he intends to form a coalition government or a new Prime Minister designate may be given the opportunity.

Following the breakdown of talks last week with the second largest party, the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) and the Left Alliance, Katainen has been struggling to work out how to get the numbers needed.

The main problem was the sudden rise of the True Finns in the election which saw them come in as the third largest party. Their terms for joining a coalition government have not coincided with those of the NCP and hence the dilemma.

Leader of the SDP, Jutta Urpilainen, may be given the opportunity to see if she can form a government.
