Deal struck to elect new president

The Kosovan Democratic Party (PDK) of Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), the two main parties in the Kosovan parliament, have struck a deal over a new president.

The two parties have agreed to elect Atifete Jahjaga a high level police official and neutral candidate as the new president.

Ms Jahjaga would replace Behgjet Pacolli whose election was overturned by a constitutional court as illegal.

The president is elected by parliament.
