Defence and Interior ministers sacked by Parliament
Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and Interior Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi have been disqualified from office following hearings by parliament.
Both men were disqualified because parliament decided that their response to cross border attacks blamed on Pakistan’s military had been weak and ineffective. Both ministers were also questioned about allegations of corruption and breaches of security.
The vote against Abdul Rahim Wardak was 146 to 72 and against Bismullah Khan Mohammadi was 126 to 90; 124 was the required vote to pass the measures.
President Hamid Karzai will now be obliged to take note of the parliament’s decision but in past cases has kept the minister in place for some time before acting on the request. Both ministers were key advisors to the president.
