Defence Minister resigns

Published

Defence Minister Cecilia Chacon has resigned in protest at the heavy handed actions by police against protesters objecting to a new highway planned to run through an Amazon rainforest reserve.

The 300km highway has been part of President Evo Morales’ modernisation plan for the country. However, it has pitched him against some of his most loyal supporters and caused splits in his ruling Movement for Socialism-Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples (MAS).

On Monday the president announced that he was suspending the highway project and would seek a referendum from the people in the affected regions.
