Published

Both Portugal and Spain saw very large demonstrations against government austerity measures yesterday.

In Spain the protests were largely centred on Madrid and were trade union sponsored, with thousands of teachers, healthcare workers and fire-fighters bussed in to the capital. The government estimates that around 65,000 people took part.

In Portugal even larger demonstrations of around 50,000 each were seen in Lisbon the capital and Oporto the country’s second largest city.
