Early polls show Perez leading

Published

A poll by Borge y Asociados published in the Periodico de Guatemal shows Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Party (PP) ahead in the polls in readiness for the 11th September presidential and legislative elections.

In last month’s poll Pérez stood on 42.5%, but even his new poll rating puts him about 21 percentage points ahead of his main rival Sandra Torres from the ruling National Unity of Hope (UNE). Torres currently stands on 17.5% and a month ago was on 20%.

Earlier this year Sandra Torres divorced her ‘beloved’ husband, President Álvaro Colom, in order that she could stand for election; the constitution bans the relatives of incumbents from succeeding them in office. At the time Torres announced that she had ‘got a divorce for her country’.
