Egypt halts gas exports to Israel

Published

A number of news agencies are reporting that the Egyptian government has informed Israel that it has stopped gas exports to Israel.

The exports, part of the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel will have a significant impact on the Israeli economy but also changes the political balance in the region.

The pipeline which supplied up to 40% of the gas needs of Israel has suffered from random attacks since the Arab Spring revolution last year. If the reports are true then the decision may also be in breach of international trade regulations.
