Egypt has a new PM

Only days after reports that the announcement of a new PM would be delayed until after Ramadan, Egyptian state TV has named former irrigation minister Hesham Qandil as the country’s new prime minister. Qandil is expected to announce a cabinet within days.

At a press conference following the announcement, Prime Minister Qandil stressed that his priority would be to fulfil the 100-day Plan, with its emphasis on security, traffic and transportation, sanitation, fuel and bread.

Qandil has been Minister of Irrigation for the last year, but has worked in a number of departments linked to that portfolio. He has also represented Egypt at numerous international conferences and although, at 50, he is considered young for the post, his background suggests he will concentrate on the immediate day-to-day problems facing the Egyptian people.
