Thailand

Election on 1st or 2nd July

Published

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban has said that the most likely dates for the Thai general election will be on 1st or 2nd July 2011.

He dismissed speculation that the House would be dissolved on 3rd May to make way for a 26th June election.

The Electoral Commission has presented three draft poll laws which must go through the House before a poll can be called. It is expected that these will be fast tracked through in the next week or so.

Meanwhile, around 112 other legislative drafts remain before parliament which will be automatically dropped if not taken up by an incoming government within 60 days of election.
