Elections to be on 16th October says elections boss

Published

Head of the Higher Independent Authority for Elections (HIAE), Kamel Jendoubi, has announced that the National Constituent Assembly elections will take place on 16th October and not 24th July.

The decision is a direct contravention of a decision made by the transitional government earlier in the week who said that the July date should be kept. Jendoubi has insisted that it is the prerogative of the HIAE to set the election date and that logistical and organisational difficulties prevent an earlier date.

At least three of the larger parties, the Ennahda, Progressive Democratic Party and Congress for the Republic are reported by Reuters to be unhappy with the decision.
