Emergency Law to be lifted

A government spokesperson has announced that the Emergency Law which was put in place in 1981 will be lifted before the start of the elections now scheduled for November and December this year.

The emergency law gave security forces unprecedented rights for random arrests and detention without charge and led to human rights abuses during the rule of ex-president Hosni Mubarak.
