Fighting in Abidjan suburb

Published

Fighting has been raging in the Abidjan suburb of Abobo for the past few days. Many have fled the area but many more are trapped. Around 70,000 people are thought to have fled Cote d’Ivoire since the 28th November election last year. Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo was defeated by opposition leader Alassane Ouattara but refuses to leave his post.

African Union and ECOWAS leaders have tried to break the deadlock but without success to date.
