Former Economy Minister assassinated

Published

A massive explosion by the Starco Centre in the commercial district of Beirut has killed former Economy Minister Mohammed Shatah and reportedly four others this morning. The bomb explosion was reported by the national News Agency (NNA) as occurring at 9.59 a.m. The explosion appears to have targeted Mr Shatah’s convoy as he left for a meeting of the March 14 coalition.

Shatah (62) was a close aide of the former Prime Minister Saad Hariri and a senior member of the centre-right and largely Sunni based Future Movement which is part of the March 14 Coalition.

Hassane Laqees, a senior figure in the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, was assassinated earlier this month and there have been several other suicide bombings in the Lebanese capital in the last few weeks.
