Government accuses protesters of armed insurrection

Published

The Syrian Interior Ministry has said that the protests across the country over the past few weeks are the work of the Salafist organisation determined to start an armed insurrection.  The Salafists are a strict Sunni sect often equated with Al Qaeda.

More than 10,000 mourners poured out onto the streets of Homs yesterday following the funerals of 12 people killed in protests on Sunday.  The protests have taken a new turn in that they are now calling for the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad and his government.

The Washington Post has also published an article suggesting that material provided by Wikileaks points to the US funding opposition groups in Syria.
