Hamas and Fatah agree to elections
The two opposing leaders within the Palestinian Territories agreed yesterday to call elections for next May.
Mahmoud Abbas, current Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and head of the mainstream Fatah movement agreed with Khaled Mashal, Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau that they should bury their differences and ‘agree to work as partners with a shared responsibility.
The two men signed a reconciliation agreement in May this year which should have brought a transitional national unity government into being, but little happened afterwards. Fatah control the West Bank whilst Hamas controls the Gaza strip.
