Higher Military Council sets rules

Published

The Higher Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces has made a number of new announcements affecting future elections.

They have confirmed that the elections will be held in September but haven’t said precisely when.  The Emergency Law will be removed before the elections and a relaxing of the curfew will take place soon limiting it to 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. local time.

The council has also said that religious based parties will not be allowed and that in future the judiciary will approve political parties and not the upper house as at present.  Parties will have to state purpose and funding sources if they wish to be approved.
