Interim National Unity Government takes shape

Published

Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi announced members of an interim government yesterday which included opposition figures.

The current Ministers for Defence, Finance, Interior and Foreign Affiars will retain their posts.  Meanwhile, Najib Chebbi of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) will become the new Minister for Regional Development.  Other opposition leaders including Ahmed Ibrahim and Mustafa Ben Jafaar will also have posts.

Leader of the Congress for the Republic (CPR) leader Moncef Marzouki has said that he will stand for President.

Question marks still remain as to when fresh elections will be held.  The constitutional court has ruled that they should be held within 60 days.  However, opposition parties are saying that a later timetable is needed to allow the people time to get to know the opposition parties, many of which have operated in exile.
