Landmark carbon tax passed

Published

The Australian parliament has passed a landmark piece of legislation that will impose a carbon tax on 500 of the country’s largest polluters.

The tax will set a price of Australian $23 (£14.80) a metric ton on the top polluters from July 2012, about double what European polluters are paying. The plan then is to move to an emissions trading scheme from July 2015.
