Layton’s last words

Published

Yesterday Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) lost his fight against cancer. Layton took the NDP from being a small third party in the federal government to being the official opposition following the 2nd May general election.

His death will leave a vacuum within federal politics which his appointed interim leader, Nycole Turmel is unlikely to fill. In a final letter he suggested that fresh leadership elections should be held in the new year.

The first test for Turmel will be a series of provincial and territory elections taking place in October and November.

In a final letter Jack Layton laid out his hopes for the future. His last words were;

“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
