Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced that Malaysia is to introduce the minimum wage. The amount to be paid will be 900 ringgit per month (£182; $296) in peninsular Malaysia and 800 ringgit (£162; $263) per month in rural areas. The move is expected to help around 3.2 million workers.

Last weekend there were mass rallies seeking changes to electoral law, with elections due by mid-2013 but expected to be later this year.
