More protests and deaths over the weekend

Published

The largest anti-government protests yet have taken place across Syria this weekend. At least 26 were killed in the southern city of Daraa on Friday and another four were killed in the coastal city of Banias yesterday (Sunday 10th April).

Videos posted on You Tube show armed people in cars firing directly into the crowds. The Interior Ministry announced that there was ‘no more room for leniency and tolerance’.

In a worrying development, nine Syrian soldiers were killed in an ambush in Banias where tanks have been deployed to contain the protests.

Although President Bashar al-Assad has been promising reforms, for some it is taking too long.
