Yemen

Move to Parliamentary system announced

Published

President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has today (10 March) announced plans to move the country to a parliamentary system. He promised a new constitution which would be put to the country in a referendum later this year. The constitution would guarantee the separation of the legislative and executive branches of government.

Measures were also announced which would speed up the process of decentralising power in Yemen and give more authority to the provinces.

Opposition groups have rejected the move, saying it is too little, too late and are calling on anti-government rallies to continue.
