New parliament sits for first time

Published

The new parliament, or at least the lower house or People’s Assembly met yesterday for the first time since the mammoth elections which took place late last year and earlier this year.

Each member took the oath with some incurring the wrath of the deputy speaker by adding their own comments at the end of the oath.

During the noisy and sometimes chaotic session a new Speaker was elected. Mohamed Saad el-Katatni a former Secretary General of the Freedom and Justice Party was elected with 399 of the 508 votes in the lower house.

The priority of the lower house will now be to set up a 100 member panel to draft a new constitution and to see the presidential election held as soon as possible.
