Parliament says no to Kirchner third term

Published

Lawmakers in both houses of the Argentinian parliament have signed a pledge that they will not allow a change in the constitution to give the current president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the option of a further term in office.

The move comes after members of the president’s Victory Front party established a ‘Cristina Forever’ campaign.

In the Senate or upper house, 28 out of 72 senators signed the agreement whilst in the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, 107 of 257 Deputies have signed the pledge.

A change in the constitution would require a two thirds vote in favour in both houses.
