Petr Nečas elected once more as ODS leader

Published

Prime Minister Petr Nečas has been re-elected as the leader of his Civic Democrat Party (ODS) yesterday at their party convention.

The decision by the party is significant because the prime minister was facing a rebellion within his own parliamentary ranks over tax rises planned for next year in order to meet a European Union imposed target for the size of the budget deficit.

Last week the government dropped to 99 members in the 200 seat Chamber of deputies. Recent local elections suggest that an early election would result in a large win for the opposition Social Democrats and Nečas is trying to avoid having to go to the polls before the scheduled 2014 election.
