PM confirms 23rd October

Published

Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi has confirmed that the government has accepted the delay from 24th July to 23rd October for elections.

Previously the Head of the Higher Independent Authority for Elections (HIAE), Kamel Jendoubi had announced that they could not meet the July deadline, but the government had insisted that it should go ahead. The government has now accepted the arguments which include the problem of identifying and registering around 400,000 Tunisians who do not have identity cards. Other problems include recruiting and training the thousands of staff needed to ensure that the elections are free and fair.
