PM suspends Cabinet meetings

Published

Prime Minister Najib Mikati has suspended all further Cabinet meetings following a dispute which started two weeks ago.

The dispute arose with ministers from Michael Aoun’s Change and Reform Bloc over appointments to key civil service positions. The Change and Reform bloc is a secular bloc with high Christian representation in the Cabinet. Michael Aoun has accused the prime minister of violating the constitution.

The prime minister has indicated that Cabinet will meet once Labour minister, Charbel Nahhas, a Change and Reform member, signs a transportation allowance decree. Nahhas has refused to sign, saying that it must go before parliament for ratification before he can sign.
