President asks UN to lift arms embargo

Published

President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has called on the United Nations (UN) to lift their arms embargo which has been in place since 1992.

The move comes after the rebel group al-Shabab said that they were merging with al-Qaeda. The president fears that the army will not be in a position to fight the renewed threat from the joint rebel movement.

Any move to lift the embargo, however, is likely to lead to an escalation of violence in the region, leaving the UN with a difficult choice.
