President steps down

The Hungarian president, Pal Schmitt has stepped down following claims that his 1992 doctorate was plagiarised from two other academic works. President Scmitt denied the accusations but tendered his resignation to parliament yesterday and it was accepted by 338 votes for to 5 against.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, László Kövér, has now assumed the role until fresh elections within the parliament can be held within 30 days.

Pal Scmitt had been in the post for just 18 months.
