President Suffers heart attack

Published

At 11 a.m. local time yesterday morning President Bingu Mutharika suffered a heart attack. After being stabilised, he was flown for treatment to South Africa. The president is believed to be in a critical state with some news reports suggesting that he is in a coma.

The constitution allows for his vice president, Joyce Banda, to take over in his absence. However, the two have barely been on speaking terms since they fell out a year into their respective terms of office and Ms Banda was thrown out of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
