Yemen

President suggests early election

Published

President Ali Abdullah Saleh continues to play cat and mouse with protesters and the international community again this week.

During the course of the week he said that he would sign and then refused to sign the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) proposal which has been on the table for weeks. Eventually the head of the GCC delegation decided to return home saying that Saleh appeared to be playing for time, possibly in readiness for a military intervention.

Meanwhile the president spoke to thousands of supporters yesterday and proposed an early election. This was rejected by the opposition who continue to protest across the country.
