President wins impeachment battle

Published

President Traian Băsescu was able to return to office yesterday after a Constitutional Court stated that the impeachment referendum held on 29th July was invalidated.

The referendum had required that at least 50% of those entitled to vote did so for the referendum result to be validated. In the end only 46.23% turned out to vote. The government then referred the matter to the Constitutional Court saying that the electorate had been incorrectly calculated but the court did not agree and after just two hours of deliberations invalidated the vote.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta has said that the government accepts the ruling even though they consider it to be undemocratic. The government is now planning a ‘large scale constitutional reform’ to prevent power ending up in the hands of one person.

There was no comment from the president.
