Presidential election within 60 days

Published

Following the hasty departure of the former President Zine Al Abedeen Bin Ali yesterday, a constitutional court has sworn in speaker of Parliament Foued Mebazaa as the interim President.

Meanwhile the government has promised a presidential election within 60 days.  Exiled opposition leaders will not be refused entry to the country although it is most unlikely that the ex President will return from his self imposed exile in Saudi Arabia.

Although the authorities have talked about a Presidential election, there is likely to be continued pressure for a general election as well.

Over the past 23 years the armed forces have supported the previous president and it remains to be seen how they will react to the current situation.
