Senegal

Protests banned

Published

President Abdoulaye Wade has banned political demonstrations in front of government buildings and other key places just two days before a large opposition rally.

Opposition parties were planning to hold a demonstration on Saturday to demand that Wade leaves power at the end of his current term. Senegal has a two term policy for presidents, but Wade is intending to break this and go for a third term; he is 85 years old.

The Senegalese parliament backed off changing the constitution on 23rd June after unexpectedly large demonstrations. Wade subsequently apologised for a lack of judgement, but it hasn’t deterred him from wanting to stand again next year.
