Protests continue despite clampdown

Published

Despite a clampdown in Jisr al-Shaghur which led to thousands fleeing across the Turkish border, more demonstrations have taken place across Syria.

According to a series of newspaper reports, thousands turned out in the city of Hama demanding that President Bashar al-Assad should step down.

Elsewhere more protesters were killed, including six in al-Ariha.

The Syrian official news agency, SANA, reports that people were returning to Jisr al-Shaghur and life was going back to normal. However, independent reports say that the town has emptied of its people and only troops can be seen on the streets. 8,000 people are reported to have crossed the border to Turkey.
